Commercial Building: Upgrading of existing STP of Large Dormitory

Design and retrofit/upgrade the onsite containerised sewerage treatment plant for a large coastal dormitory housing 12,500 foreign workers to a facility with the capacity to treat 3,750m3/day of wastewater to meet NEA discharge to watercourse requirements. This containerised STP must be designed and built to last for another 10 years until the estimated completion of Changi Terminal 5.

Challenge

The current containerised STP had many operational issues like overflow of sewerage due to insufficient storage capacity for peak loads, low treatment efficiency and deteriorating conditions of the containers which makes it impossible to operate for another 10years.

Solution

A new reinforced concrete STP which will be able to last 10 years till the completion of Changi Terminal 5 that integrates new advanced treatment process that is highly efficient for industrial or municipal wastewater treatment. It is specifically designed to handle fluctuating organic loads and produce high-quality effluent suitable for reuse.

  • Stage 1 - Screening (Pre-Treatment)
    Raw wastewater passes through physical mesh screens or bars to remove large solids, debris, rags, plastics, and grit.
  • Stage 2 - EQ: Equalization Tank
    Industrial manufacturing or commercial processes often discharge wastewater in batches, leading to spikes in flow volume and chemical concentration throughout the day. The Equalization (EQ) tank is designed to handle an additional 20% flow rate beyond the mean dormitory sewage output. It is also integrated with the existing Overflow Tank for improved flow buffering capacity. Debris & grease removal to reduce waste deposition downstream.
  • Stage 3 - AOA: Anaerobic-Anoxic-Oxic (Biological Treatment)
    The wastewater passes through three distinct zones to remove organic pollutants, nitrogen, and phosphorus. Anoxic – oxic – anoxic - oxic process to meet the NEA effluent discharge requirements. The process can also be adjusted to suit the influent quality (final anoxic tank can be converted to an oxic tank).
  • Stage 4 - MBR: Membrane Bioreactor (Advanced Filtration)
    BWRO (Brackish Water Each module has sufficient spare capacity (flux) for an additional 50% loading for future expansion. It includes a fully-automated CIP washing system for ease of operation.
