Commercial Building: Upgrading of existing STP of Large Dormitory

Design and upgrade the on-site containerised sewerage treatment plant for a large coastal dormitory housing 12,500 foreign workers to meet NEA discharge to watercourse requirements. This STP must be designed and built to last for another 10 years until the completion of Changi Terminal 5.

Challenge

The current containerised STP had many operational issues like overflow of sewerage due to insufficient storage capacity and chockage, low treatment efficiency and deteriorating conditions of the containers which makes it impossible to operate existing plant which is already in unusable condition

Solution

A new reinforced concrete sewage treatment plant which will be able to last 10 years till the completion of Changi Terminal 5 that integrates new advanced treatment process that is highly efficient for municipal wastewater treatment. It is specifically designed to handle fluctuating incoming loads and produce high-quality effluent suitable for reuse.

Stage 1 - Coarse Screen
Incoming municipal wastewater (sewage) is pumped into a coarse screening chamber whereby a bar screen intercepts large debris (e.g. rags, plastics, wood, and other solids) in the wastewater before it enters the treatment plant. The removed debris is transported to a waste collection bin or conveyor system for disposal.
Stage 2 - Equalization Tank
The wastewater subsequently enters the Equalization (EQ) Tank which regulates the flow rate of the wastewater and homogenizes the characteristics of the wastewater before further treatment. It helps to balance fluctuations in volume, pollutant load, and pH to ensure stable and efficient downstream processing.
Stage 3 - Membrane Fine Screening
The wastewater is then passed through a membrane fine screen, as a pre-treatment before a subsequent Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) to remove fine particles, fibres and hairy objects. This screening process is essential to protect the MBR membranes from fouling, clogging, and excessive wear, ensuring optimal system performance and longevity.
Stage 4 - AOA: Anoxic-Oxic-Anoxic (Biological Treatment)
The wastewater subsequently undergoes an innovative Anoxic-Oxic-Anoxic (A/O/A) process in successive tanks for biological nutrient removal. This energy-saving biological treatment stage uses carefully controlled anoxic and oxic conditions, supported by beneficial bacteria, to effectively remove nitrogen and phosphorus while meeting stringent effluent discharge standards.
Stage 5 - MBR: Membrane Bioreactor
The wastewater then flows into the MBR chamber, where the submerged membranes physically separate the treated water from activated sludge. The membranes act as a fine barrier to retain suspended solids, bacteria, and viruses, producing a clear, high-quality effluent with effective pathogen removal.
Stage 6 - Disinfection
The treated water from the MBR undergoes effective disinfection through a chlorination process to ensure compliance with discharge standards before being released into the open channel.
