Oil & Gas: Slop and Sludge Wastewater Treatment and Reuse

To design and build a wastewater treatment plant that can handle 250 m3/d of wastewater using Advanced Oxidation Process. The treated wastewater is recycled and reused for on-site process applications.

Challenge

To design and build a wastewater treatment plant for a refinery in Batam to treat spent caustic wastewater and recycle the treated water for non-potable use.

Solution

We implemented a multi-stage “treatment train” as this type of wastewater is often high in salinity, heavy metals, and recalcitrant (or difficult to degrade) organic compounds. Our solution combines traditional physical separation with AOP and membrane technologies.

  • Stage 1 – Sedimentation
    Incoming wastewater is retained in settling ponds to allow settleable solids and floating materials to separate, reducing the overall suspended solids content.
  • Stage 2 – Chemical + Plasma-Nano
    Wastewater from the previous stage is transferred to an Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) system to remove phenol, sulfide, and organic matters. The wastewater is first chemically conditioned to achieve the optimal pH, then treated through Plasma-Nano oxidation.
  • Stage 3 – Multimedia Filters (MMF)
    Treated water from the previous stage passes through the MMF, where filter media such as sand remove suspended solids.
  • Stage 4 – Activated Carbon Filter (ACF)
    Filtered water from the MMF passes through the ACF, where activated carbon further removes phenolic compounds and excess COD.
  • Stage 5 – Brackish Water Reverse Osmosis (BWRO)
    Filtered water from the ACF is transferred to the BWRO system, where membranes remove dissolved solids. The process produces filtered water for reuse within the facility and concentrate, which is discharged to the on-site incineration facility.
